Acid leak at Port of Catoosa plant contained

Hazardous materials teams spent Monday morning cleaning up a sulfuric acid spill in Rogers County. It happened at the Valmontâ€™s Oklahoma Galvanizing plant off state highway 266 near the Port of Catoosa shortly after 9 AM.

The plant's manager Pete Smith says the acid spilled out of a storage tank after a seam failed. "We've had a small leak of sulfuric acid from our storage tank, something that never happens but it did and as a precaution rather than handling it ourselves we called out the haz-mat people and the fire department. There's not risk to our neighbors or no risk to the environment. We've got everything under control."

Nine people exposed to the sulfuric acid were taken to Claremore Regional hospital as a precaution. A Zebco plant nearby was evacuated, also as a precaution.
