Combination TV/VCR sets recalled because cabinet can break during lifting

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Matsushita Electric Corp. is recalling about 500,000 combination TV/VCRs because the device's cabinet can break during lifting, allowing the set to fall and injure hands and feet.

Ten incidents were reported in which the TV/VCR cabinet broke at the ventilation holes in the top rear of the cabinet and fell. Four cases resulted in minor cuts and bruises, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

The combination TV/VCRs are gray-black and have the following brand names: Panasonic, Quasar, RCA or JCPenney. They were sold nationwide from January 1995 through December 1996 for $300 to $490. Affected by the recall are 13-inch and 20-inch combination sets.

Consumers should contact Panasonic, Quasar, RCA and JCPenney to receive a free retrofit kit to cover the ventilation holes and prevent lifting from that area.
