Summer pool safety

The middle of July can be a hot and humid time, and for many Tulsans, the pool can provide an escape from all the heat. But just how safe are the pools in Tulsa, and who is in charge of keeping them in good condition?

News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says many parents bring their kids out to the pools during the summertime, and most aren't questioning the pools chlorine and PH levels. Their main concern is the lifeguards, and the safety of their children.

Parent, Angela Grant: "The hotel pools don't seem to be as well maintained, there is never a lifeguard on duty, so you have to hope the other parents and other people watch for your kids and their kids as well.â€

Roger Roth is a pool inspector in Tulsa who says there is a sure-fire way to tell if a pool is clean enough to use. "Mainly what we look for is the clarity of the water. If you can't see the main drain, this is something that every person who comes to a swimming pool can look at. If you can't see the main drain, don't get in it."

One recent national study showed that several states have poor pool inspection programs, with many hotel pools faring especially badly.
