(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma's state auditor and inspector says US Senate candidate Kirk Humphreys was never cleared of wrongdoing in a 1996 land deal.
State Auditor and Inspector Jeff McMahan says it is not up to his office to file criminal charges, and no other law enforcement agency decided to pursue them either.
However, he says his office's report "in no way" cleared Humphreys of wrongdoing.
McMahan's comments come after Humphreys' campaign manager claimed the former Oklahoma City mayor was cleared of wrongdoing.
Humphreys' campaign manager, Rick Buchanan, was defending the candidate against an attack from Corporation Commissioner Bob Anthony, who is running against him in the US Senate race.
Buchanan accused the Democrat McMahan of playing partisan politics.
