New testing method encourages more people to test for H-I-V

(Washington-AP) -- In an effort that may allow more people who are at high-risk for HIV to get tested, the Bush administration is permitting wider use of a new testing method that gives results in 20-minutes.

The relaxed rules will allow testing at counseling centers, community health centers and doctor's offices. The weekend announcement coincides with National HIV Testing Day, which is today.

Health and Human Services secretary Tommy Thompson says HIV testing has "never been easier or more accessible than it is today."

The "rapid oral test" is needle free and safer for health care workers. The FDA says the method is 99% accurate and will encourage more high-risk people to get tested because it doesn't involve drawing blood.
