(Oklahoma City-AP) -- It's an election year, and that means campaign signs will pepper lawns and areas all along roads and highways.

But inevitably, some are placed where they shouldn't be.

Cities and the state do not allow campaign signs along public rights of way. The signs are viewed as a potential traffic hazards.

Although the practice is illegal, officials say the offenders are rarely fined. They say it's often difficult to prove who placed the sign.

So road crews simply remove the signs instead.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokeswoman Terri Angier says it's a major undertaking crews handle while out working on potholes or other projects.
