A Bixby Police officer who shot a golden retriever over the weekend says he was acting in self defense.
John and Cathy Benzinger say their dog Fluppy was tethered to the fence in their backyard Saturday morning when police came out to answer an alarm call. Police say Fluppy was barking and approached Officer Cory Forister, so he shot the dog three times.
The dog later had to be put to sleep because of his injuries. Bixby Police say procedure when handling animals depends on the circumstance. Bixby Police Lt Paul Tryon: "If you're being attacked by anybody a canine or person, you do what you have to do to protect yourself. Was that followed in this instance, I don't know until we do an investigation.â€
The officer's brother says he's very upset about shooting the dog. He says Corey has two dogs himself, but felt he was doing what it took to protect himself.
