Here's a consumer alert in the wake of this week’s storms across central and eastern Oklahoma.
As many storm victims start repairing the damage to their homes, businesses and cars, emergency management officials offer these tips to avoid contractor fraud.
Look for licensed contractors who have performed well in the past. If they can't do the work, ask them to refer someone reputable who can.
Ask for references and check them out. Beware of any contractor who says he is licensed or authorized by FEMA or Oklahoma Emergency Management. Neither government agency approves or licenses any contractor.
Never make payment in full up front, and always insist on a receipt for any partial payment.
Get a written agreement for home repairs.
To report fraud or price gouging, call the Oklahoma Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 405-521-2029.
