(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma City's former fire chief is throwing his hat into the political ring.
Gary Marrs is running for the Ward one seat on the Oklahoma City Council. The seat opened up when Mick Cornett was elected mayor.
Marrs says serving on City Council would be a way to stay involved.
He believes his experience has taught him how to deal with everything from the city budget process to the concerns of individuals and neighborhoods.
Marrs served in the fire department for 30 years, and he retired in 2001. He led the fire department during the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the deadly May third, 1999, tornadoes.
He worked as a mayor's assistant until about a year ago.
