The number of deadly speeding accidents in Oklahoma is on the rise. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says speeding contributed to more than one fourth of fatal crashes last year.
Of the 154 speed-related fatalities in 2003, 64 wrecks involved drivers who were 16 to 20 years old. That's up from 42 wrecks in the same age group in 2002. Most of those young drivers were male.
Some state highway officials say Oklahoma's rules for granting driver's permits and licenses are too lenient.
