(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The Oklahoma City school district is going smoke free.
The district's school board approved the ban at Monday night’s meeting. The new policy will forbid smoking on all school grounds, property and buildings, 24-hours-a day, seven days a week.
Under the current policy, smoking is prohibited from 7 AM to 4 PM. Some districts have designated smoking areas for adults. Students are not allowed to use any tobacco product on school grounds.
School board members say they wanted to promote healthy living for students.
The regulation applies to employees, students and visitors. The ban means smoking is prohibited at sports events and other activities on school grounds.
The new regulation takes effect May 14th.
