Oklahoma native Fern Holland has been remembered at a special memorial service for her work in Iraq.

Family members, friends and former co-workers attended the service for Holland in Washington DC. Holland was shot and killed in Iraq while driving near Baghdad. She was remembered as a passionate heroine, an activist for democracy, and a risk-taking visionary.

An ambassador credited Holland with leaving an indelible imprint on Iraqi women, and fighting for their rights.

Holland was a native of Miami. She graduated from the University of Tulsa Law School.
