(Quapaw-AP) -- The state Department of Transportation is trying to determine the stability of a highway near Quapaw where two sinkholes have appeared.
The sinkholes are on the shoulder of State Highway 69-A about one-half mile north of Quapaw. The holes are both about seven feet in diameter and two feet deep. They appeared last summer.
The three-man drilling crew from the Transportation Department is working to determine the depth of the mine and whether it could become a hazard to motorists.
The sinkholes are about 100 yards from the opening of the Alice Greenback mine, which apparently closed during the 1920s.
