The Sandites are beaming because of a big check worth its weight in gold.
Operation Gold Pride was begun after a challenge to the Sand Springs community by the Sand Springs home. And through bake sales and penny-drives, business donations and even a concert by a hometown Broadway star, the town raised $637,000 for the Sand Springs public schools.
Sand Springs School superintendent Lloyd Snow: “A great statement in our community about the importance of education and the support that’s been given to us. Gives us momentum to make this good school an even better school."
Sand Springs has lost almost $2.5-million in state school funding over the past two years. The money turned over Friday allows the district to stabilize its budget enough to begin offering full-day kindergarten classes next school year.
