DETROIT (CP) _ Star defenceman Derian Hatcher of the Detroit Red Wings will be out four to six months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Thursday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks.

Hatcher was hurt when he got tangled up with Vancouver's Markus Naslund and Bryan Allen early in the first period.

Hatcher, 31, signed a five-year, $30-million US contract with Detroit in July after playing the first 12 seasons of his career with the Dallas Stars organization.

He was runner-up for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman last season.
