(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The Checotah Police Department is getting part of almost $5-million in government grants to enhance school safety.

Checotah, located in McIntosh County in east-central Oklahoma, will receive $40,000.

A total of 106 law enforcement agencies in 27 states will receive the US Justice Department grants.

The agency's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services awarded the grants through its Secure Our Schools program. The program provides funds to improve security at schools and on school grounds.

Since 1995, the program has invested more than $10-million to advance community policing.
