(McAlester-AP) -- Some McAlester residents want a cross removed from the city seal.
Firefighter Steven Belcher spoke to the City Council Tuesday, saying he represents a small group of citizens who don't like the cross being on the seal because they think it violates the separation of church and state.
He says the group would like to see the cross removed from all items that have the seal, including vehicles, trash bins and stationery.
Council members were not required to take any action on Belcher's statement because his request to address them had not included a request for action.
Mayor Dale Covington says he'll get in touch with the city attorney to discuss a course of action.
The McAlester city seal shows a cross, corn and a coal miner's helmet.
