(Idabel-AP) -- Cuts in Medicare and Medicaid funds have hit the McCurtain Memorial Hospital hard.

Hospital officials say they are losing money by treating Medicaid patients because of a cut in the reimbursement rate for such patients.

Hospital financial officer Ray Whitmore says the McCurtain Memorial has lost $570-thousand in the last ten months.

Now the hospital wants county officials to form a sales tax plan to keep the medical center running.

County officials say they don't know if voters will approve an additional tax.

If they don't, the hospital may close and McCurtain County residents will have to travel to Arkansas or Texas for a hospital.
