An invasion is underway at a popular Green Country lake - and it appears to be unstoppable.
Colonies of Zebra Mussels are spreading through the waters of Oologah Lake.
Zebra Mussels are named for their black and white stripes.
Over time, their large colonies can be devastating. Clusters of the critters can completely cut off water pipes. The mussels can also clog up outboard motors.
Oologah is the first Oklahoma lake to be infested, and hopefully the last. Keeping them contained won’t be easy though, due in part to the popularity of Oologah lake with boaters and fishermen.
Biologists are urging lakegoers to clean out their bilge water, live wells, bait buckets and boat hulls before heading to new waters, because the menacing Mussels can “hitch a ride†to another lake. Hot water will kill the Zebra mussels, so a trip to the car wash is also recommended.
