Thousands will be heading to area lakes this holiday weekend. But before you hit the water, the lake patrol hopes you'll do a little advance planning, in case of an emergency.

Make sure you take a map and know where you are on the lake. If you have to call 911, that information could be life saving. Make sure your boat is equipped with everything it needs legally. Such as the registration, a fire extinguisher, life vests, and a horn.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers will be doing spot checks.
