TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ A toddler who was in the back seat of a car stolen from a convenience store Monday was found safe nine blocks away, police said.

The girl's mother and a friend left the 2-year-old in the back seat of the car during a brief stop at a convenience store, said Sgt. Wayne Allen. They left the car running and the keys in the ignition.

When they came out of the store, the car and child were gone, he said.

Police were about to call an Amber Alert moments later when a resident found the child wandering a residential neighborhood. Amber Alert networks quickly distribute information about kidnapped children.

Allen said police do not believe the person who took the car knew there was a child inside at the time.

Police were still searching for the stolen car.
