(McAlester-AP) -- An incentive resignation plan is helping McAlester school officials to avoid teacher cutbacks.

Assistant Superintendent Terry James says the district is offering incentives to teachers and other staff members who leave before their contracts are up.

Through buyout options, 15 certified and three noncertified staff members are planning to leave the district.

The buyouts will keep the school board from having to lay off teachers -- along with resignations, retirements and not rehiring one-year contract personnel.
