A renowned historian, novelist and playwright is the winner of this year's Helmerich Distinguished Author award.

The Tulsa Library Trust announced Tuesday morning that Shelby Foote will receive the $25,000 prize in December. Foote is best known for his three volume series, "The Civil War: A Narrative," which took Foote some 20 years to complete.

The Helmerich Award recognizes authors who've made significant contributions to literature. Past winners include Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, and Norman Mailer.
