(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A statewide lottery plan was approved by a legislative committee Wednesday after Governor Henry urged lawmakers to pass it.
The lottery bill passed the House committee on a 5-to-4 vote despite opposition from religious groups and Republican lawmakers on moral and ethical grounds.
Governor Henry said polls show 75 percent of Oklahomans support a lottery if revenues are dedicated to education. Henry says the bill calls for a statewide voter of the people on whether to create a lottery that he says could raise $300-million for education.
The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.
