CRESCENT, Okla. (AP) _ Three 8th-graders have been released into the custody of their parents after police arrested them for allegedly carrying pipe bombs into a middle school.
Officers were called to Crescent Middle School Monday afternoon after two of the students surrendered the devices to Superintendent Gary Beathard, Lt. Mike Strider, a police spokesman, said Wednesday.
Officers arrested the juveniles on complaints of possessing and manufacturing explosives.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol and FBI bomb squads moved the devices to a location away from the school and detonated them Monday afternoon, Strider said.
The pipe bombs were about 4 to 6 inches long; one was made of PVC pipe and the other made from a film canister. Fireworks-style fuses were used on the devices, he said.
Remains of the pipe bombs were sent Tuesday to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for analysis.
The students told police they didn't intend to detonate the bombs inside the school, Strider said.
