Tulsa Mayor Susan Savage leaves office Monday afternoon. But Thursday was her last full day in the office.
As News on Six reporter Emory Bryan explains - the mayor was still on the job - but packing her things too. Mayor Savage is still in the office - but not for long. With her top aide Paula Hale - she's packing boxes. “When you've been in one office for ten years and the office next door for four, you accumulate more stuff than you can imagine."
She still has a few business cards left, but Monday - the desk will be Bill LaFortune's. Her last full day started at breakfast. “Started out meeting with the department heads this morning just to visit with them a little bit about the budget." And in the afternoon - a routine task for mayor - the media conference. Now almost wherever she goes, someone says good-bye - and hands over a plaque. She's got something of her own to hand the new mayor - a certificate of election, along with a cell phone and pager she says she won't miss. "When you're mayor 24 hours 7 days a weeks it doesn't matter if you're in the office."
Now she's almost packed up. After ten years in the job, she's had her share of critics - and political cartoons. "But it has been great fun, a lot of hard work, an incredible privilege. Tulsa is my home town and I love it and it's been a privilege to serve.â€
Savage says she's happy with her accomplishments - and despite their political differences wishes her successor well - as she hands over the title, Monday at 2 o'clock.
Savage was first elected in 1992, after working as assistant to Rodger Randle - Tulsa's first mayor under the current form of government adopted in 1990.
