WASHINGTON (AP) _ A Utah company is recalling about 7,500 hiking exercise machines because of an electrical component that can overheat and cause a fire.
ICON Health & Fitness, of Logan, has received 14 reports of the machines smoking and plastic pieces melting, though no injuries have been reported, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.
Hikers are treadmills that have shorter platforms, operate at lower speeds and can be set at steep inclines. The problem component is in the control system at the base of the unit, the CPSC said.
The company's voluntary recall involves the NordicTrack Adventurer with model number NTHK9990, the NordicTrack Teton with model number NTHK2249 and the ProForm TrailRunner with model number PFHK9990. Hikers that already have been repaired have a sticker reading ``KIT'' near the model number label on the machine, the CPSC said.
The hikers were sold for as much as $2,300 at sporting good and department stores nationwide between April 2000 and December 2001.
Consumers should unplug their machines and contact ICON for a free repair kit or service appointment. The company can be reached at 800-999-3756.
