WASHINGTON (AP) _ Value City is recalling thousands of candles and candle kits that can cause fires and burns, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
The gel candles in about 2,300 children's candle kits sold by Value City and Schottenstein stores, based in Columbus, Ohio, can melt their plastic candleholders and start fires. In one of two incident reports received by the government, one kit started a fire that caused serious damage to a home and burned a consumer's hands and feet.
The Gel Candles kit includes four bags of gel chips in bright colors, wicks, glitter, two glass holders, and two plastic candleholders shaped like a bumblebee and a dragonfly, or a tulip and a daisy. The gel chips have various fruit scents.
Writing on the box includes: model numbers 3041 or 3042; ``Express Ways! Gel Candles;'' ``Scent-sational Colored Gel!;'' and ``AGES 8 AND OLDER.''
The company also is recalling about 6,400 botanical candles, which contain dried flowers that can catch fire when the candles are burned. The company has received one report of the flowers catching on fire.
The candles are made of uncolored wax and have dried yellow, purple and brown flowers in the outer layer. The candles are either square or round, and are about 4-inches high by 4-inches wide.
Value City and Schottenstein discount stores nationwide sold the gel candle kits and the botanical candles during 2001 for about $4.
The government said consumers should stop using these products and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. For more information, consumers can call the company at 1-888-870-9181 for gel candle kit information and 1-888-278-6370 for botanical candle information.
