A man sentenced to death for the brutal murder of Monica Decatur will get a new trial.

Shelton Jackson was given the death penalty for her murder and life in prison for the near-deadly beating of her son Oz. He also received a 35-year sentence for burning her house down. But Friday, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that Jackson did not have adequate counsel on the murder charge.

Jackson's new trial will be for the murder of Monica Decatur only. The sentences for arson and injuring her son, Oz, still stand.
