CHICAGO (AP) _ The Federal Aviation Administration has established a no-fly zone for small aircraft that focuses on the Sears Tower.

Federal officials banned the aircraft from a semicircular section of downtown Chicago's densest concentration of tall buildings. The zone extends 1.7 miles north, east and south from the 1,454-foot Sears Tower.

The FAA action on Tuesday rejected a city proposal that would have protected much more of the urban core.

The city had requested flight restrictions stretching five miles in every direction from Navy Pier, protecting not only the skyscrapers but both of Chicago's baseball stadiums.

Mayor Richard Daley has complained that tighter flight restrictions have remained in place in Boston, New York and Washington since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks but are being relaxed in Chicago.
