As can be imagined in this crisis, the demand for blood to help sustain victims on the east coast is staggering. Tulsans have flooded the local chapter of the American Red Cross, some waiting in line for 3 hours to donate.
Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating has directed the state National Guard to deliver the units of blood to the New York area. Already some 800-units of blood from Tulsa and Wichita, Kansas are being transported.
For those of you wishing to donate blood, the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross, at 11th and highway-169 is extending its hours this week; it will be open every day from 8 AM to 6 PM.
Red Cross officials emphasize that donations will be needed all this week and into next week. They say the need for blood on the east coast will actually increase as the days go by. And, our local blood supply has been depleted to help meet the emergency needs in New York.
