FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ The younger brother of Rep. Gary Condit was arrested Saturday on charges he violated his probation in a 1996 drunken driving case, authorities said.
Darrell Wayne Condit was taken into custody Saturday at 3:30 a.m. as he tried to check into the Red Carpet Inn in Dania Beach, near Fort Lauderdale. An off-duty deputy recognized Condit's van as he pulled into the parking lot.
Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Darrell Condit is the brother of the California Democrat who has been linked romantically with Chandra Levy, the former federal intern who disappeared May 1.
Darrell Condit, 49, was arrested in Monroe County in November 1996 and charged with driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana, officials said.
Monroe County Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said she did not know how Condit violated his probation.
``Between 1994 and 1996, we saw him as regular visitor to our detention facility,'' Herrin told The Associated Press. ``After 1996, we didn't have any contact with him at all.''
Darrell Condit will likely be arraigned Sunday, then transferred to Monroe County, Broward County Sheriff's spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick said.
Gary Condit admitted in a third interview with police that he was having an affair with Levy, according to police sources. Police have said the congressman is not a suspect in Levy's disappearance, but federal authorities are investigating whether he tried to get a stewardess to lie about their own relationship.
