A winter storm sweeping across the state is causing havoc for north central and northeastern Oklahoma.
News on Six anchor Tami Marler spent Tuesday morning between Tulsa and Bartlesville and says most folks in Tulsa County won't be phased by this winter weather, but as you head north on US Highway 75, temperatures drop, the wind picks up, and you can see the change.
In Washington County, work crews are dealing with brittle branches stressed to the limit by heavy ice that built up overnight. One tree cracked down the middle and fell onto a rural county road. Workers had to cut it in pieces to clear the way. In other areas, the ice is causing branches to sag across electrical wires, leaving thousands without power.
Pleasant Sanders lives north of Skiatook in Washington County. “Yeah I had to stoke the fireplace; I told my wife, I lit her a candle. I said, 'honey, now I don't want you falling, you might hurt yourself in here.' So I put wood in there, went out and got her some more and I said 'I gotta go check on some friends.'"
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is warning people to slow down, follow at a safe distance, and be especially careful on bridges and overpasses.
