A special Tuesday night on KOTV, "Time to Live", profiled success stories of cancer patients at St. Jude's Research Hospital. One Tulsa teen credits the world-renowned hospital for helping in her recovery. News on Six reporter Patrina Adger has her remarkable story.
This is Haley Hubbard today. A healthy, active 17-year-old junior at Jenks High School. Five years ago, Haley was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia that almost took her life. “They told me I had to undergo a bone marrow transplant in order to survive so I did."
Haley endured four days of chemotherapy and radiation at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis where she was in isolation for six months. Then, last year in November, she was diagnosed with "another" rare form of cancer. “I had almost made it to the mark where they say you're cured and I was diagnosed again."
It can be difficult for someone to have a positive outlook on life when they've been through cancer twice. But Haley says she credits her recovery to her family and friends and to the amazing doctors and nurses at St. Jude Hospital. "Without them I know I wouldn't be here today not only once but twice."
But her friend, Lauren Reece, say its Haley who's been their rock and inspiration. “She's just such a strong person and she has been through so much. So upbeat and happy. She's an amazing about it really she is." Another friend, Rasheed Siddiqui, "She's got so much personality and she takes care of everyone." Haley's best friend, Jill Morgan, "I remember coming home and her calling me and telling me 'it'll be okay' she was better than I was."
Haley hopes to become a pediatric oncologist and work at St. Jude Hospital. To help other cancer children, the same way she St. Jude helped her. “St. Jude is an amazing hospital, they saved my life."
Right now Haley is cancer free and travels all over the US with St. Jude sharing her story.
