(Oklahoma City-AP) -- An Oklahoma City Democrat will become the state Senate's first black and first woman to hold a leadership spot when the legislative session opens in February.

Angela Monson has been named one of three assistant majority floor leaders. She is one of two black senators and one of five women in the Senate.

Monson says she hopes it encourages others to get involved in public service.
