ENID, Okla. (AP) _ An Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer died Thursday in a crash as he was responding to a report of a traffic accident.
Christopher Van Krevelen, 29, died at the scene on a highway overpass in Enid.
Highway patrol Lt. Brandon Kopepasah says Van Krevelen's patrol car struck a guardrail. The car also apparently hit a pole and caught fire. Initial reports said flames exploded ammunition from Van Krevelen's side arm as rescuers tried to reach him.
No one else was injured in the crash or in the accident to which Van Krevelen was responding.
Van Krevelen, a former Enid police officer, had been stationed in Enid as a trooper since finishing training 3 1/2 years ago. Kopepasah said Van Krevelen is married with no children.
