(Ponca City-AP) -- The Ponca Indian Tribe of Oklahoma and an industrial workers union are suing Continental Carbon in federal court saying the company violated federal water protection laws at its Ponca City plant.

The Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union and the tribe say the company is polluting groundwater and surface water.

The group claims the company has ignored requests from the state Department of Environmental Quality to instal monitoring wells and liners in waste lagoons.

Continental officials say they learned of lawsuit Tuesday.

Houston-based Continental converts carbon black oil, a by product of oil refining into carbon black, which is used in tires and plastic products.
