(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The Chickasaw Turnpike would become a free road under a plan approved Monday.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority voted unanimously to transfer operation of the two-lane turnpike to the state Department of Transportation.

The turnpike opened in 1991 and extends for nearly 17-and-a-half miles from south of Ada to Sulphur.

It's the only two-lane turnpike in the turnpike system and OTA Chairman Fred Hall says it never should have been included in the system
