Tulsa area schools are trying to cut corners to make up for a shortfall in state money. Tulsa Public Schools kicked off its volunteer substitute training program Monday morning.
Almost seventy people showed up for the one-hour crash course in teaching. Its all part of the district's plan to use un-paid volunteers to fill in for absent teachers.
The session was just one hour, but one volunteer, Vertula Rentie, said it covered the basics. "Those are the basics those are the high points taking control of that classroom getting there early. The rules are set out and they're definitely different than they used to be where you didn’t get as much information as you do now.â€
School officials say volunteer subs could save the district $800,000 a year. The volunteers will start heading into the classroom after Thanksgiving break.
