(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Newly approved legislation settles a long-time dispute between the federal government and three Indian tribes over land ownership in the Arkansas Riverbed.
The bill lets Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw nations keep the title to the riverbed and portions of the bank that they already own. A 40 (m) million dollar settlement will be divided between the three tribes.
The bill also prevents the federal government from removing any of the people who live on more than 77-hundred acres of riverbed land owned by the tribes.
The Cherokees, Chickasaws and Choctaws have agreed to give up any claims they have to disputed lands.
