(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma high school students will have to complete another year of math under a plan given preliminary approval Thursday.

The state Board of Education approved a statement of intent to require four years of high school math.

Governor Keating has been pushing to raise the math requirement and state school Superintendent Sandy Garrett says most college remediation courses in Oklahoma are in math.

Garrett also says Oklahoma students are scoring below the national average on the math portion of college entrance tests.

Rules to put the policy in place will be drawn up and considered by the board, which will take up the issue again in January.
