Education has been a key topic this political year. Tuesday’s vote comes as Tulsa Public School Superintendent Doctor David Sawyer warns of more budget cuts.
The cuts aren't certain, but Sawyer says its possible the district may have to reduce its budget by another $4.5-million. One suggestion is to end all bus service, except for special education.
Sawyer has mentioned eliminating bus service in stages, cutting buses for high school students first, then looking at buses for younger kids if more money is needed. Other cost-saving measures, offering early retirement for TPS employees and tightening the hiring freeze.
Dr David Sawyer, TPS Superintendent: "we are making strides to protect the district to the best of our ability against pending further reductions in state revenue."
Sawyer also assured employees that layoffs will be a last resort.
