It was a close call for several Tulsa police officers involved in a shootout this weekend.

Five officers were injured when a man opened fire Sunday morning in an east Tulsa neighborhood. News on Six Reporter Patrina Adger says police tell us they're thankful none of the officers were killed.

Tulsa Police say four of the five injured officers have already returned to work. I spoke to the wife of Officer Darren Bristow. She says her husband was hit with more than 100 shotgun pellets. She says he's in a lot of pain right now but he's doing fine and recovering at home. Bristow and four other officers were hit after Benito Hernandez used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot several police officers and two bystanders.

Officer Scott Walton told me Officer Bristow actually saved another bystander at the scene. "Officer Bristow was able to shove this one person out of the way and shield them from a lot of the pellets and that was the reason he took a lot more than anybody else." The injured officers were taken to the emergency room but were treated and released.

Walton says Bristow will be out for several days. The other officers hit have returned to their regular shift. Police did return fire killing Benito Hernandez.

Three officers and two of the injured officers are on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation by the department’s internal affairs.
