OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Police detained a 9-year-old Oklahoma City boy after finding a loaded handgun in his backpack at school.
Authorities found the .380 semiautomatic handgun _ with one bullet in the chamber and the safety turned off _ after receiving a call from the Longfellow Elementary principal Thursday, Sgt. Charles Phillips said.
The principal said she was told by several students that the boy had a gun and was threatening to kill a fellow student.
``The principal immediately went to class, took the student out of class and seized the backpack,'' Phillips said Friday.
The boy said he did not know how the gun got into his backpack.
``The juvenile denied any knowledge of the gun at all and of making any statements,'' Phillips said.
The boy's legal guardian, his grandmother, told police she does not know where the child got the gun because she does not keep guns in her house.
The grandmother said the only explanation she had was that the boy had been bullied at school.
The student was taken to the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center.
