Oklahoma is teaming up with Texas to fight Sickle-cell anemia. OU's Health Sciences Center in Tulsa and Oklahoma City will work with two Dallas schools to create the National Institutes of Health's first sickle-cell center in the Southwest.

The disease targets blood vessels and prevents body tissues from receiving oxygen. Sickle Cell anemia strikes about 70,000 across the country, including one in 500 African Americans.

A federal grant worth $8 million is making the project possible.
