OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Devout Sinner claimed a 7-1/2 furlong allowance race Sunday that some are hoping is a promise of bigger things to come.
Devout Sinner competes later this month in the Ricks Memorial. Sunday's prep was her seventh win from 14 starts to push her career earnings to $193,995.
With the meeting's current leading jockey Cliff Berry aboard, Joan Charlton's Devout Sinner took command of the race as the field of six females moved onto the backstretch.
Devout Sinner pulled away at the top of the stretch and cruised home in 1:30.20 to win by 2-1/2 lengths. Western Delight held second, 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Islay Mist who was third.
The heavy choice of the wagering public at 1-5 odds, Devout Sinner paid $2.60 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.20 to show. Western Delight paid $2.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Islay Mist paid $3 to show.
The ride on Devout Sinner helped give Berry a riding triple Sunday as he also won with Count My Nichols ($4.60) in the fifth race and Crazy Summer Fling ($4.80) in the eighth. The trio gives Berry 25 wins for the season, 10 more than second-place Rodney Trader.
Don Pettinger, Remington Park's all-time leading jockey in terms of wins, pulled within five of the 3,000 plateau for his career on Sunday. Pettinger piloted Saddle A Dream ($4.60 to win) to victory in the third race. The score gave the veteran rider 2,995 lifetime triumphs.
