Tulsa's starting quarterback says the lack of controversy at the Q-B position this year has unified the team.

Quarterback Tyler Gooch says the team was divided last year when he split playing time with incumbent Josh Blankenship. The Golden Hurricane finished the season 1-and-10.

With Blankenship gone, Gooch says he's developing his confidence as the number-one guy.

Tulsa coach Keith Burns, meanwhile, says he wants the sophomore quarterback to take a more conservative approach to running the ball.

Gooch missed parts or all of five games with injuries last year. Burns says he needs to slide sometimes instead of taking on linebackers and defensive backs down the field.
