McALESTER, Okla. (AP) _ The daughter of a former McAlester resident has been selected as the poster child for a St. Jude Children's Hospital marathon team.
Carson Jones, 5, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor in 1999. She will be on the poster for a team the hospital entered in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Marathon, scheduled for October in Washington, D.C.
Carson's father is Darren Jones, a graduate of McAlester High School.
The girl had surgery to remove the brain tumor, then entered a research program at St. Jude's.
``She has been cancer-free almost 2 1/2 years now,'' said Darren Jones, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy who now lives in Virginia.
The hospital is asking each team member to raise $1,000 to benefit the children who are patients at St. Jude's.
