(Fayetteville-AP) -- Frank Broyles says doctors have told him he has a ``manageable'' case of prostate cancer, but he doesn't intend to retire as Arkansas' athletic director because of the disease. The 77-year-old ex-coach says doctors caught the cancer early and that surgery might not be necessary. The school said yesterday that the cancer was detected during a regular physical checkup three weeks ago.

Broyles' was Arkansas' football coach from 1958-1976 and has been athletic director since 1973.

Broyles has said Chancellor John A. White wants him to remain as athletic director through the school's Campaign for the 21st Century, which runs for another three years.
