A Broken Arrow sixth grader got quite a surprise Friday. Sandy Martinez was the big winner of the Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom essay contest.

Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from around the nation wrote essays detailing what they could do to save an endangered species in their region.

One winner was picked from each state. Sandy did her essay on a fish. "I picked the leopard dart because everybody wanted to do all the cute cuddly animals. So I picked the smallest, most helpless animal I could find."

She gets an all-expensive paid trip to Los Angeles where she will join the other winners in the Wild Kingdom kids summit.
